  • Check smoke and carbon monoxide detectors; replace batteries

  • Clean and replace filters in your heating system

  • Test your garage door and grease tracks

  • Clear gutters of leaves and debris

  • Insulate pipes to protect them from freezing


  • Know where the following controls are located and how to turn them off:

  • Heating fuel main shutoff

  • Main water shutoff

  • Water shutoff valve for toilets, faucets, and washing machine

  • Main electrical fuse/breaker box

  • Keep a wrench near the shutoff valves. Your home should have a fire extinguisher in the kitchen and garage.
